The Poets by Clae Eastgate

Clae Eastgate is an established portrait painter with over 18 years experience creating projects and commissions for private clients, collectors and institutions.

Noted subjects are Her Majesty the Queen, and the former Poet Laureate, Dame Carol Ann Duffy.

Painting the Poets is a unique concept: a collection of painted portraits by Clae Eastgate that celebrates the lives and work of some of the UK’s finest contemporary female poets. The collection has featured in various tours with one of the paintings now on permanent display in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

NoteWorthy is honoured to provide access to Clae’s “The Poets”, the piece that not only marked the beginning of this one-of-a-kind collection but has also been on show at the National Portrait Gallery in London and part of the BP Award exhibition, the most prestigious portrait exhibition in the world. This piece will also be featured in a major tour of the full collection.

“The Poets” is a double portrait of the former British Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy in conversation with former National Poet of Wales, Gillian Clarke. The two are old friends and are situated here at a poetry retreat in Wales where Clae spent time painting them.

Duffy’s appointment as the first female Poet Laureate was an extraordinary event in the 400 year history of this prestigious Royal honour. Eastgate’s portrait simultaneously marks Duffy’s personal achievement and draws attention to the erstwhile absence of women in the laureateship timeline thus far. Eastgate became aware of the groundswell of a new generation of women writing poetry in the wake of Duffy’s tenure, one that is shaping -and being shaped, by shifting social norms.
