The Hand of Churchill – Sold

This is a rare find and treasure for any Churchill enthusiast!

The history of this fascinating bronze cast dates back to the 1950s when the renowned sculptor, Oscar Nemon, was struggling to sculpt Churchill’s hand as he wanted it, for the statue he was commissioned to create for London’s Guildhall.

He made two plaster casts of the hand: one splayed (now in the Churchill Archives of Churchill College, Cambridge) the other clawed (the original is held by the Churchill War Rooms).

Ultimately unveiled in 1955, Nemon went on to create numerous Churchill statues (such as the one in the lobby of the Houses of Parliament). This particular cast was created by Nemon’s estate in 2004 and is believed to be exceptionally rare – being one of no more than five examples created.
