It’s around 8am on a bright autumn morning and, while most of London is rushing for their first flat white of the day, I’m standing in a pin-drop-quiet gallery at the British Museum for a private audience with one of the most extraordinary works from the medieval world.
There is something epic about seeing the Bayeux Tapestry in person. Laid out along the length of the gallery, it’s quite a spectacle. And, without the crowds around you, there’s time and space to look more closely: to follow the characters and the arc of the story.
It’s 14 October, 1066, and Harold, the new king of Anglo-Saxon England is facing the forces of William, Duke of Normandy, near Hastings. The stage is set. From there, the drama gallops along: arrows fly, knights fall and horses tumble. But it’s the smaller details that you could easily miss. In a private viewing, the tapestry reveals the expressions, the gestures and the quirky moments woven into the tale.
Accompanied by our NoteWorthy guide and a British Museum expert, it’s an experience that turns this relic into a drama to rival any Hollywood blockbuster, unveiling the symbolism, political intrigue and humour alongside the horror.
As the lines begin to lengthen outside the museum, ticket holders eagerly awaiting its official opening, we step into one more gallery. Viewing the Parthenon sculptures and the Rosetta Stone in complete calm and stillness becomes a moment to really treasure.
Time alone with the Bayeux Tapestry is a privilege that very few experience. As I emerge, blinking, into the bright light of the foyer, three words stay with me: sobering, powerful, mesmerising. And now, perhaps for that strong coffee.
