Life-Size Highland Bull

This spectacular life-size Highland Bull by world renowned artist James Doran Webb is made with life size driftwood and a stainless-steel frame, ideal for outdoors.

James has amassed an extensive collection of driftwood, varying in size and form from small pieces to large natural sculptures, each piece hewn by natural forces into a myriad of individual shapes.  The wood is found along the shorelines, riverbeds and valleys of the archipelago and is predominantly one species of wood which is incredibly oily and dense enough to withstand decades of exposure both extreme tropical climate and intense frosts. Indeed, this wood has already withstood at least a half century of exposure since dying.

James started to design driftwood furniture in the mid 1990’s and it was while playing with the various natural forms that he was drawn to experiment with his first driftwood animal sculpture.  His large supply of wood has made it possible for him to find the pieces which most lend themselves to the natural form and shape needed to give his animals the movement and reality he strives to obtain in every piece he creates.

James exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show, London each May where, in 2013, he was awarded the Director General’s Award for the best stand. He also holds a solo exhibition in the autumn in London, hosted by the Eton Contemporary Fine Art Gallery. He has exhibited in Ootmarsum, Holland, and in Cebu and Manila, Philippines. He has a large body of work on permanent display at Singapore’s iconic Gardens by the Bay which include a 6m high Wyvern on a tree, 3 larger than life size galloping thoroughbreds, and many other pieces aside from this.
